Her granddaughter recently gave an interview with some fascinating insight on her grandmother:

Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune was an educator with a passion for literacy and also a civil rights activist. She served as a policy advisor to multiple presidents, including President Franklin D. Roosevelt (and his wife, Eleanor Roosevelt) and was the recipient of nine honorary doctorates. A statue in her honor was installed in the U.S. Capitol on Wednesday and marks the first time a Black American has been represented in the National Statuary Hall collection (where each state has two statues). Her statue represents the state of Florida, where she lived and founded a university, and will replace a statue of Confederate General Edmund Kirby Smith.
