Peggy Cifrino, Powell’s longtime aide, said he had been treated over the past few years for multiple myeloma, a blood cancer. The Powell family’s social media post did not address whether Powell had any underlying illnesses.

Multiple myeloma impairs the body’s ability to fight infection, and studies have shown that those cancer patients don’t get as much protection from the COVID-19 vaccines as healthier people. (Associated Press)

On Monday, retired four-star general Colin L. Powell passed away due to COVID-19 complications. He was 84 years old and fully vaccinated, his family said. Powell was the son of Jamaican immigrants and was raised in the South Bronx. After college, he joined the U.S. Army and later became the first black American to serve as national security advisor, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and secretary of state. Across more than four decades of public service, Powell became a leading voice in foreign policy in America.
