Milton S. Hershey, the founder of Hershey's chocolate, was born 164 years ago today. At age 14, he became an apprentice to a confectioner (candy maker) but failed repeatedly at starting his own candy business. In 1894, he founded the Hershey Chocolate Co. One of his "secrets to success"? Utilizing the abundance of fresh milk from his home state of Pennsylvania. Hershey and his wife, unable to have children of their own, founded a school for orphan boys - to which Hershey later endowed his fortune. Today, the Milton Hershey School continues to provide cost-free K-12 education to children in need.
