Why It Matters: Cavalcante (34) was captured on Wednesday morning after he was detected by heat signal technology roughly 30 miles west of Philadelphia. He was found sleeping and had a rifle with him that he had stolen on Monday. When authorities began moving in, Cavalcante tried to flee by going through thick underbrush, but a police dog was released and subdued him. He "continued to resist as he was taken into custody," and sustained a minor wound after being bitten by the dog (The AP). Pennsylvania State Police Lt. Col. George Bivens said that after "further processing and interview," Cavalcante "will ultimately be transferred to a state correctional institute where he will be housed and begin to serve his life sentence."

Big Picture: In the two weeks he was on the run, around 500 law enforcement officers engaged in search operations.
