Why It Matters: The President and first lady toured Lahaina, Hawaii, where one of the deadliest wildfires in U.S. history caused catastrophic damage last week. President Biden spent nearly six hours walking around the community to survey the damage and talk with those who have been impacted by the fires. As of Tuesday, at least 115 people have died and around 850 people remain missing.

The Damage: As of Sunday, about 85% of the fire-stricken area had been searched, and around 2,000 people did not have power with a total of 10,000 people without phone and internet access. The federal government has more than 1,000 officials on the ground to help with administering aid, and Federal Emergency Management Agency Administrator Deanne Criswell said the Biden administration has distributed more than $8.5 million in aid to about 8,000 families impacted by the fires.
