Who: A 20-year-old woman, Kaylin Gillis, was shot by a 65-year-old man, Kevin Monahan. Gillis was riding in a car with three others, and was part of a group traveling together which also included another car with two passengers, as well as a motorcycle.
What: The group of vehicles were traveling together, looking for a friend's house, when they turned into the wrong driveway. While trying to turn their vehicles around, Monahan fired two shots from his porch, one of which hit Gillis. Monahan has been charged with second-degree murder and is awaiting a bail hearing.
When: In the evening on Saturday, April 15.
Where: Hebron, New York, a small town located in Upstate New York. The sheriff described it as "a very rural area with dirt roads. It's easy to get lost." He added that the area has bad cell service.
Why: Monahan's attorney said, “The description I was given by my client is there were multiple vehicles, including a motorcycle, revving engines, coming up the driveway at a high rate of speed," adding that it “created an atmosphere and a fear that there was menace going on.” The sheriff said, “I don’t know how they could menace anyone with those type of actions, but they were clearly leaving the residence when the shots were fired.”
Also This Week: The incident occurred within days of a separate shooting in Kansas City, Missouri, in which a 16-year-old boy was shot and injured by a 84-year-old man after accidentally going to the wrong house to pick up his younger siblings.
