“I’m convinced that people want leaders that appeal to the best of America and not simply appeal to our worst instincts.”

Two-time former Arkansas Governor Asa Hutchinson (R) announcing he will run for U.S. President.

Why It Matters: Gov. Hutchinson joins several other Republicans (including Nikki Haley, former UN Ambassador, South Carolina governor) challenging former President Trump for the GOP nomination.

  • Hutchinson is the most recent candidate to announce his candidacy and he chose to do so only days after former President Trump was officially indicted by the NY Prosecutor.
  • Hutchinson calls the indictment a "great distraction" and a "sad day for America."
  • Hutchinson is a father of four; he graduated for law school and practiced law as a prosecutor. He was elected as a Congressman and served in several positions in the federal government, including as an undersecretary of the Department of Homeland Security under the Bush Administration, before being elected as governor of Arkansas for 8 years (2015-2023).
  • A formal announcement by Gov. Hutchinson is expected at the end of April.
