Big Picture: This derailment came only hours before Norfolk Southern's CEO Alan Shaw answered questions from lawmakers about the February 3 derailment and toxic chemical spill in East Palestine, Ohio.
In Alabama: The derailment occurred at around 6:45 am on Thursday morning as the train was headed from Atlanta, Georgia to Meridian, Mississippi. About 30 cars derailed due to reasons not yet known; there have been no reports of injury or of a hazardous leak. This is the third train derailment from this company since the derailment in early February.
During Thursday's hearing, Shaw stated that he was "deeply sorry" for what happened in East Palestine. When questioned about the safety of his company, he stated: "We can always get better ..."
