  • Why It Matters: The attack comes as grain exports reportedly begin to move out of Ukraine, calling into question the security and reliability of a trade which impacts the world's grain supply.
  • Russia bombed the port city of Mykolaiv in what the Ukrainian president called one of the "most brutal" attacks of the whole war.
  • Among those killed in the attack were a successful Ukrainian businessman and his wife, whose home took a direct hit.
  • Over the weekend, Russia's President Vladimir Putin addressed the Russian Navy on "Navy Day" and referenced the Black Sea (which Ukraine also depends on to move goods to more prominent waterways/trade routes): "We set the boundaries and areas of Russia’s national interests – economic, vital and strategic – clearly and transparently. First and foremost, these are our waters of the Arctic, the Black Sea, the Sea of Okhotsk, the Bering Sea, and the Baltic and Kuril Straits. We will ensure their protection rigorously and using all available tools."

One of Ukraine’s richest businessmen is killed in the port city of Mykolaiv.
