Why This Matters: Judge Jackson will become the first black woman in American history to serve on the Supreme Court.
A few details:
- Judge Jackson will replace outgoing Justice Stephen Breyer.
- Judge Jackson will not join the court until Justice Breyer's official retirement this summer.
- All 50 Senate Democrats voted in favor of Judge Jackson, as did 3 Republican lawmakers: Sen. Romney (R-Utah), Sen. Collins (R-Maine), & Sen. Murkowski (R-Alaska). This division of votes along party lines is consistent with previous confirmation votes cast for other recently-nominated Super Court justices.
