U.S. releases more aid to Ukraine as war continues, despite ceasefire talks with Russia.

“If we really are fighting for freedom and in defense of democracy together, then we have a right to demand help in this difficult turning point ... Freedom should be armed no worse than tyranny.”

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in his nightly video address. He also thanked the U.S. for the $500 million in aid that was announced on Wednesday.

  • Pres. Biden and Pres. Zelensky talked on the phone for nearly an hour about the U.S. providing "defensive support" and "macro-financial and humanitarian aid." Ukrainian lawmakers also visited D.C. this week to request additional resources.
  • During the phone call between Pres. Biden and Pres. Zelensky on Wednesdsay, Pres. Biden said the U.S. will provide the Ukraine govt. with a $500 million aid package in "direct budgetary aid."

Why It Matters: Russia and Ukraine officials met this week to discuss a ceasefire. While Russia said it would de-escalate operations around Kyiv and Chernihiv in Ukraine, Russian shelling is still occurring near those areas. In order to combat Russian forces, Ukraine continues to seek foreign aid.
