- 22-year-old Chen earned a record score on Tuesday because of the difficulty of his routine, described as the "hardest ever tried in competition."
- His world record score beats the current record holder (and Olympic challenger, Japan's Yuzuru Hanyu) by 2 points.
- Why It Matters: Chen did not medal in the short programs during the last Olympic games, but he went on to win several world & U.S. champion titles (all while pursuing his degree at Yale). He currently is in position to medal.
