  • The President announced a new mandate, requiring private companies of more than 100 people to require vaccinations or weekly testing.
  • However, the details about what this requirement will look like, when it will go into effect, and how it will be enforced remains TBD.
  • The President also announced that stores will sell at-home COVID-19 tests at cost (a reduction as they usually retail for $20+).
  • A few other notable items: Deploying more nurses and doctors from the Defense Department to support local hospitals. More loans ("up to $2 million") for small businesses. Appealed to state governors to require vaccinations for all school staffs.
  • Why It Matters: While the White House is not requiring vaccinations directly of American citizens (something that has never been done at a federal level), it is proposing a way to require more vaccination through enforcement in the private sector. The requirements will likely be challenged in court, but we won't see those challenges until we hear more details on how exactly this proposal will work.

Here's the transcript of the President's remarks
