- Both accomplished high jumpers (when an athlete leaps over a raised bar) reached a certain, shared height. They then failed three attempts at a higher bar that would determine the winner.
- At this point in the competition, the judge said they could have a jump-off but Barshim asked if they could share the gold.
- Sharing medals dates back to 1896 - when, believe it or not, two other athletes *also* competing in the high jump shared a silver medal.
